Our Story
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We adopted Nick as a wee infant, and we are honored to be his chosen parents. One evening, early in December of 1995, Nick complained of a tummyache. His dad rubbed his tummy to make it feel better, and felt something that just didn't seem to belong. It took quite a few trips to quite a few doctors before we finally found a doctor who would listen to our concerns. Nick was officially diagnosed with Neuroblastoma on January 2, 1996. He underwent the standard therapy of chemotherapy and surgery and radiation, but the tumors kept growing. He then had a bone marrow transplant, more surgery, and more radiation, but the tumors just kept growing. After three years of treatment, the cancer invaded Nick's bones and bone marrow. We thought he was a goner for sure, but an experimental chemotherapy combination cleared up the cancer in the bones and bone marrow, and stunned the fast growing tumors in his belly. This bought Nick enough time to qualify for another experimental therapy.........and another, and another, and another, and another, until finally, after seven years (eighty-four months), of continuous therapy of one sort or another, Nick finally achieved remission. He has been in remission since December 2002. We are truly blessed to be the parents of such a great kid.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our hope is for future cancer therapy to quickly cure the child without leaving them disabled with permanent hearing loss, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, chronic endocrine issues, chronic digestive issues, sterility, learning difficulties, higher risk for other cancers, physical deformities and scars, and a variety of other problems. Our hope is for cancer therapy to be affordable and available to all families. Our hope is for the researchers and scientists to have the money they need to continue their efforts to find the cure. Our biggest hope is that cancer never kills another one of "our" babies.
